To the surprise of many, the Pittsburgh Steelers activated running back Rashard Mendenhall from the PUP list on Friday. Mendenhall suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in the final week of 2011, and was thought to be out for most of the 2012 season.
At just eight months removed from a serious knee injury, it seemed unlikely that the former Illinois star would be able to help the Steelers this season, and most fantasy writers believed that Isaac Redman would be the primary ball carrier.
This move certainly complicates the running back situation for the team, and fantasy owners looking at Redman as a possible value pick in the fourth or fifth round may be disappointed. Both players will certainly have fantasy value, but it is unclear at this time how well Mendenhall will be able to perform.
