San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews suffered a broken collarbone on his first carry of the game against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night.
Mathews was reportedly targeted by head coach Norv Turner to become a workhorse back this season with the departure of Mike Tolbert to the Panthers. The one knock against Mathews has been the fact that he is injury prone – a trait that appears to be true.
Mathews will undergo surgery on his broken clavicle and will miss up to six weeks of action. According to Mike Florio of PFT.com, Ronnie Brown and Jackie Battle will likely carry the load for the Bolts at the start of the season. It is also possible that the team may sign a veteran free agent running back like Cedric Benson.
