Ryan Mathews practiced last week, only to be inactivated as the weekend approached. With Mathews now firmly in the middle of the 4-6 week window that was originally projected following his broken clavicle, the Chargers are expected to allow Mathews to suit up tomorrow and play on Sunday providing there are no setbacks.
San Diego has been cautious with Mathews throughout the recovery process, repeatedly saying that they will not return until he is capable of handling the full workload. I’m not buying that a full 25 carry game is in store for the Fresno State product, but having the Falcons as opening opponent is favorable. Atlanta has given up 4.5 yards per carry and 135 rush yards per game this year.
Mathews is a fringe top 10 running back this week, and would be higher if I could be guaranteed 22-27 touches, and, despite the risk involved, should be considered a starter in all formats barring a setback.
