New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees lost a key deep threat at wide receiver on Wednesday with the announcement that Joe Morgan will miss the entire 2013 due to a torn ACL.
According to a report on usatoday.com, Morgan sustained the knee injury in a scrimmage on Saturday, and the official diagnosis of a torn meniscus and partial tear of his left anterior cruciate ligament was shared by head coach Sean Payton today.
Payton also revealed that starting defensive end Kenyon Coleman will miss the season due to a pectoral tear.
“These are two players that are significant,” Payton told reporters after Wednesday’s practice. “Obviously they are losses and we’ve got to find some guys that can step up and take their spots.”
From a fantasy perspective, the loss of Morgan does take away a downfield threat and the number three wide receiver for Drew Brees behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore. The Saints will look to replace Morgan with journeyman veteran Steve Breaston.
Despite the loss or Morgan, fantasy owners should still view Brees as the consensus number two quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers and ahead of Peyton Manning and Cam Newton.
