The San Diego Chargers lost two key offensive weapons this off-season when wide receiver Vincent Jackson and running back Mike Tolbert left the team to sign lucrative deals with the Bucs and Panthers.
Although veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers will surely miss both players, he is excited to have a healthy Antonio Gates return to his old form and newly acquired wide receivers Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem.
Royal, a former Virginia Tech star who had an amazing 91 catch rookie season with the Bronocs, begins camp as the likely starting slot receiver in the Chargers offense. According to a report by SI.com’s Jim Trotter, the Chargers have lacked a true slot receiver with Rivers under center.
Trotter writes: “Rivers can’t stop gushing about slot receiver Eddie Royal. San Diego has not had an inside receiver like Royal since Rivers arrived in San Diego in 2004.”
Fantasy owners looking for an nice sleeper WR to target in the final few rounds of the draft should consider taking Eddie Royal. If he can stay healthy and play a full 16 game season in 2012, Royal could be in line for 60 catches in the potent San Diego offense.
